Paper Lantern Workshop

About the workshop

As promised,  I have designed a two-layered paper lantern inspired by the Dorset countryside. It has been designed in to fit the £10 Ikea cloche (more details in the description below) and it features rolling fields, fences and hedges, little cows, houses and trees and it looks gorgeous, even if I do say so myself.

This three hour paper lantern workshop is held at the gorgeous Walford Mill Crafts, Wimborne and in that time you’ll be able to cut and assemble your own paper lantern.  Suitable for beginners and advanced paper cutters alike, you’ll head home with your gorgeous lantern and a battery operated tea light – when the sun goes down and the candle is switched on the lantern comes to life with incredible shadows.

What to expect at your paper lantern workshop?

This paper lantern workshop is held in the lovely education space at Walford Mill Crafts in Wimborne, Dorset. Your paper lantern workshop begins with a warm welcome at 1pm. I’ll introduce the basics of papercutting – the tools you’ll be using and the templates you’ll be cutting. You’ll then work through a simple practice sheet to get your scalpel skills up to speed before embarking on your paper lantern templates.

We spend the rest of the workshop happily chatting while we cut out and assemble our lanterns and we really get to know each other during the course of the workshop. They are always a lot of fun, and I pride myself on making everyone feel welcome, safe and relaxed. You won’t want to leave!

How does the paper lantern light up?

Each of you will get a little LED tea light which lights up your lantern when finished. It looks wonderful just in natural light (I have one on my kitchen in a glass bell jar/cloche) but when it gets dark and you light the LED tea light it looks magical.

Does it fit a glass dome? Where can I get one from?

I have designed this two-layered lantern to fit a £10 Ikea glass dome which is usually available year round in store (not it is the £10 version and NOT the larger £15 version).

What is the finished lantern size?

The finished lantern has a base of 100mm in radius and a height of around 170mm

Can a beginner come to a paper lantern workshop?

Absolutely! I believe anyone can enjoy the relaxing art of papercutting and I will be there to help should you need it. More advanced paper cutters will enjoy this one too as it is still intricate and wonderfully enjoyable to cut.

Can I come on my own?

If you come along to my spring lantern workshop on your own I’ll make sure you won’t feel alone. It is my duty to make everyone feel welcome. I’ll be sure to keep the conversation flowing and your mug full of refreshment. We arrive as strangers and leave as friends. Let me know if you are anxious and I’ll make sure to seat you next to me so you’re not alone.

Can I buy the tools from you?

Yes! If you have fallen for the relaxing charms of papercutting, I bring along my ‘shop in a box’ so you can purchase the scalpels we have used, cutting mats, and even copies of my book ‘Papercutting Tips and Techniques‘ (which I’m happy to sign for you!)
