WALFORD MILL CRAFTS
About the workshop
Come and join me for a joyful, relaxing day of lino printing in a small, supportive group of 6 at the charming Walford Mill Studios in Wimborne. No art background or printing experience is needed; this is an introductory workshop aimed at the absolute beginner, or those who might have dabbled at school and forgotten it all! I will help you along the way, make printing feel inclusive and accessible, and hopefully start your love of all things inky!
We will start the day by looking at an overview of lino printing (materials, tools and techniques) and will all practise carving techniques together to get your confidence up. You will then plan a finished print from a drawing or photo of your choice (you can trace this if you’re not confident drawing from scratch!), and I will teach you how to reverse and trace your design onto lino. I will guide you through the whole process of carving and understanding positive and negative space (which bits to carve away!) and you can then enjoy a relaxing few hours mindfully carving your block (with some nice music, a hot drink and the obligatory biscuit).
After a little break for lunch, you will get to enjoy the fruits of your carving labour and see your design come to life; learning how to ink up your block and print on paper using professional printing inks, rollers, a small press and a good old fashioned wooden spoon! I will teach you how to get a good print with lots of top inking tips, and you will come away with up to five prints (depending how speedily you work!) to frame or gift. Handouts will be provided so you can carry on your journey at home, without forgetting all the technical bits you’ve learnt along the way.
Tea, coffee and biscuits are complimentary, and you can head to the delightful Little Pickle at the Mill just across the courtyard if you want something extra special to drink or a tasty lunch.
All materials and aprons are provided, but please bring an image that is around 20 x 15cm that you would like to work from (I will also bring some photos and templates if you’re stuck with this) as we will be printing on slightly smaller than A4 paper. Any theme goes: landscapes, portraits, botanical themes, still life, pet portraits: you can print whatever you would like to have on your wall at home!
